Buying a saree from India when you live abroad
Abroad you choose a saree from one rack. In India you choose from a whole country of weaves. Order to your Indian address and we send them on.
Yes — you can buy sarees from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.
Why this is hard to buy where you are
Saree shops abroad stock a small range at a large markup, and most of it is party-wear georgette. The handloom silks, the regional weaves and the everyday cottons are sold in India, by the people who weave and sell them, at Indian prices. The big silk houses, the handloom labels and the marketplaces all sell online, and an Indian address turns any of them into an ordinary domestic order.
Choose by weave
- Kanchipuram (Kanjeevaram) Sarees: heavy Tamil Nadu silk with a woven border, the usual choice for weddings in the South.
- Banarasi Sarees: Varanasi silk with zari brocade, the classic North Indian wedding saree.
- Kasavu Sarees: Kerala cream cotton with a gold border, worn for Onam and Vishu.
- Kerala Wedding Sarees: the Kerala bridal saree, usually tissue or silk with heavier zari.
- Set Mundu: the two-piece Kerala mundu and neriyathu.
- Kerala Half Sarees: half sarees and pattu pavadai for girls and young women.
- Mysore Silk Sarees: light, plain Karnataka silk with a narrow zari border.
- Paithani Sarees: Maharashtra silk with peacock and parrot pallus.
- Patola Saree: double-ikat silk from Patan in Gujarat.
- Pochampally Saree: Telangana ikat in silk and cotton.
- Sambalpuri Saree: Odisha tie-dye ikat, cotton and silk.
- Jamdani Sarees: fine Bengal cotton with woven motifs.
- Chanderi Saree: light Madhya Pradesh silk-cotton with zari.
- Readymade Saree Blouses: stitched blouses, if you would rather not find a tailor abroad.
Where to buy it
| Shop | What they are good for |
|---|---|
| Nalli | Chennai silk house trading since 1928, with silk sarees across most weaves and clear descriptions of fabric and zari. |
| Pothys | The broadest price ladder of the big houses, from everyday cotton to bridal silk. |
| Taneira | The Tata group's handloom saree label, organised by weave and region rather than by colour. |
| Kerala silk houses such as Kalyan Silks, Seematti and Jayalakshmi | Kasavu, Kerala wedding sarees and silk for Onam and weddings. |
| Myntra and Ajio | The widest choice of printed, georgette and party-wear sarees at everyday prices. If any of these cannot deliver to your country, your Indian address makes it a domestic order. |
Saree sellers handle overseas orders differently, and their policies change. Sending to your India Rabbit address keeps every order a domestic purchase.
What to check before you order
- Start from the occasion. Weddings usually mean Kanjeevaram or Banarasi silk, Onam means kasavu, everyday wear means cotton or handloom, and parties mean georgette or chiffon.
- Read the stated fabric, not the title. Many sarees sold as silk are art silk or a blend, and the listing says so further down.
- Check the length. A standard saree is about 5.5 metres plus a blouse piece, about 6.3 metres in all; a nine-yard saree is a different product.
- Most sarees come with an unstitched blouse piece. Many sellers offer blouse stitching and fall and pico as a paid option, which is worth choosing before you order, because a tailor who can cut a saree blouse is harder to find abroad.
- Buy several together. Sarees fold flat and are light, so a box of four costs little more to ship than a box of one.
Weight, customs and getting it here intact
Weight
Cotton, georgette and chiffon sarees are light, a few hundred grams each. Silk with zari is heavier, and a dense bridal Kanjeevaram can pass a kilo.
Volume
Sarees fold flat into a small box, so they ship on their real weight.
Customs
Declared as clothing, item by item, with the value you paid. Everyday sarees often stay under the duty-free limit where you live; bridal silk carries a high value and will usually pay duty. Your destination page has the figures. Check what your destination allows.
Condition
Each saree is wrapped on its own. Zari pieces stay folded on their existing creases rather than compressed, so the border is not crushed.
Sarees by country
Sarees to the UAE
Karama and Bur Dubai sell sarees, but the choice is a small part of what Indian sites carry, and the silk houses charge less at home than their Gulf branches and resellers do. Kerala to the Gulf is our fastest route, so a saree for Onam, Diwali or a wedding can be ordered a few weeks ahead rather than months. Personal parcels valued up to AED 1,000 are generally duty-free. Above that, customs duty is typically 5% of the value including shipping, and 5% VAT applies.

Saudi customs is strict on declarations, so we list every saree accurately with its value. Personal parcels up to SAR 1,000, including shipping, are generally free of customs duty, but 15% VAT applies to imports. Above SAR 1,000, duty applies as well. Sarees to Kuwait
Kuwait's Indian community goes back generations, and the sarees people order from India are the ones hard to find in Salmiya or Farwaniya at an Indian price: Kanjeevaram and Banarasi silk for weddings and Kerala kasavu for Onam. Personal parcels up to KWD 100 are generally duty-free; above that, customs duty is generally around 5% of the value. Kuwait has no VAT.

Oman has one of the largest Kerala communities in the Gulf, and Ruwi in Muscat sells sarees, but the choice is a small part of what Indian websites carry. People order the sarees that matter most from India: Kanjeevaram and Banarasi silk for weddings, and kasavu for Onam and Vishu. Salalah, Sohar and Nizwa have far less locally, which is where ordering from India makes the most difference. Since August 2026, personal parcels up to OMR 100 are generally duty-free; above that, customs duty is typically 5% of value, and 5% VAT applies to imports.

Sarees to Qatar
Doha's Indian shops sell sarees, but the range is a fraction of an Indian website's, and a silk saree costs less from the weaver's home market than from a reseller abroad. Most Qatar orders are wedding silks and Onam kasavu, often several sarees bought across a few weeks and sent as one box. Personal parcels up to QAR 1,000 are generally duty-free; above that, customs duty is typically 5% of value. Qatar has no VAT, which makes one larger consolidated box particularly good value.

Sarees to Bahrain
Bahrain's Indian community is long established and Manama's Indian shops stock sarees, but for a wedding silk or a particular Kerala weave the choice is on Indian websites. Bahrain is one of our quickest routes, so a saree ordered for Onam or a wedding can be bought a few weeks ahead. Since mid-2026, parcels valued at BHD 100 or more pay customs duty, typically 5%, and 10% VAT; below that, a personal parcel is generally clear of both. Splitting a large order into boxes under BHD 100 is not a reason to ship separately: the extra shipping usually costs more than the tax saved.

Brickfields in Kuala Lumpur and Penang's Little India sell sarees, and many Malaysian Indian families still order silk from India for Deepavali and weddings, especially Kanjeevaram from the Tamil Nadu silk houses. A large festive order can pass RM500, where duty and sales tax start. Parcels up to RM500 arriving by air courier are free of import duty; registered online sellers charge a 10% low-value goods tax at checkout. Above RM500, import duty and sales tax apply.

Deepavali and weddings are when most saree orders go out, and Singapore is one of our faster routes. GST applies to imported goods, including low-value parcels. Declare contents accurately; one consolidated box is simpler to declare than several small ones.

Sarees to the UK
Southall, Wembley, Leicester and Birmingham have saree shops, at British prices and with a fraction of the range. Ordering from the silk houses and handloom labels in India, then sending several sarees in one box, is how most wedding and festival shopping is done. For goods up to £135, UK VAT at 20% is normally charged by the seller at checkout; above £135, the courier collects VAT and any duty before delivery. Since 15 July 2026 the UK–India trade agreement has cut or removed duty on many goods made in India where the origin rules are met. VAT still applies.

Sarees to the USA
Edison, Jackson Heights, Devon Avenue and Fremont have saree shops, but a pure silk saree costs far more there than from the house that wove it. Sarees fold flat and are light, so several in one box keep the shipping cost per saree low. There is no duty-free allowance for parcels from India: the USD 800 exemption was suspended in August 2025, and since 24 July 2026 Indian goods also carry an extra 10% duty on top of the normal rate. The courier collects it before delivery.

Sarees to Australia
Harris Park in Sydney and Dandenong in Melbourne sell sarees, with a small range at Australian prices. Plain silk and cotton sarees clear without trouble; Australian biosecurity inspects anything with wood, seeds or plant material in the trim. GST and duty generally apply to goods valued over AUD 1,000. Australian biosecurity is the strictest of any country we ship to: wood, cane, seeds, honey and plant material are inspected and may be refused.

Sarees to New Zealand
Auckland and Wellington have only a few saree shops, with a small range, so ordering from India and sending one box is the practical answer. Up to NZ$1,000, Customs collects no duty and overseas sellers may charge 15% GST at checkout; since 1 April 2026 a small levy applies per parcel. Above NZ$1,000, Customs collects duty, GST and an entry charge. Biosecurity is as strict as Australia: wood, cane, seeds, honey and plant material are inspected.

Sarees to Sri Lanka
Colombo has saree shops, but most sarees are woven a short distance away in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and the full range is sold there. The hill-country Tamil community and Colombo's Indian professionals order wedding silk, Deepavali sarees and Kerala kasavu from India. Because duty and levies stack on the value, a wedding saree or a festival order travels better than everyday sarees already sold locally. Bona fide gifts and personal items are free of customs duty up to LKR 15,000 and of VAT up to LKR 10,000; above that, customs duty, 18% VAT and further levies apply. The recipient pays charges before release.

Sarees to Canada
Brampton, Mississauga and Surrey have saree shops, but a pure silk or handloom saree costs far more there than from the house that wove it, and the choice is a few racks rather than a whole market. Ready-to-wear and pre-stitched sarees are worth a look if draping is not your thing; they fold just as flat. Sarees are light, so several in one box keep the cost per saree low, and order wedding-season sarees early because of the Canadian winter. Duty and GST usually apply to parcels valued above CAD 20, and genuine gifts up to CAD 60 may be exempt. Because the threshold is low, one consolidated box is better value than several small parcels.
