Buying a Banarasi saree from India when you live abroad
The most copied saree in India, which is why where you buy it matters more than what you pay for it.
Yes — you can buy Banarasi sarees from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.
Why this is hard to buy where you are
Banarasi is a GI-protected craft — registered as Banaras Brocades and Sarees — and it is also the most imitated weave in the country. Abroad you are shown whatever one importer chose, usually at a markup and often powerloom. Buying in India puts you in front of the Varanasi weaving houses themselves, where the difference between handloom katan silk and a Surat polyester copy is visible, disclosed and priced honestly.
Where to buy it
| Shop | What they are good for |
|---|---|
| Tilfi | Varanasi house selling pure handloom katan and kora, with real zari flagged as its own category rather than left ambiguous. |
| Sacred Weaves | Varanasi. States Silk Mark certification on its pieces, which is the one independent check available on silk purity. |
| Ekaya | Banaras handweaving in contemporary cuts as well as classical sarees, for anyone who wants the craft without the six yards. |
| iTokri | The accessible end, and one of very few Indian sellers that publishes an actual gram weight on every product page. |
| India Handmade | The Ministry of Textiles marketplace, with a GI-tagged section. Shallower stock, useful as a provenance baseline. If any of these cannot deliver to your country, your Indian address makes it a domestic order. |
Weaving houses and craft marketplaces set their own international policies and change them without notice. Ordering to your India Rabbit address sidesteps the question, and usually the international surcharge with it.
What to check before you order
- Turn the fabric over. A genuine handloom Banarasi shows loose floating threads across the back and the motif readable from both sides. A clean, flat, printed-looking reverse means powerloom or print.
- Real zari is silver or gold-plated silver and ages to a soft, slightly antique glow. Imitation zari is brassy and bright, and it cracks or flakes where the saree has been folded.
- Treat the phrase Banarasi-inspired as what it is, the standard wording for a Surat-made polyester imitation. A very low price on something sold as pure Banarasi is the same signal.
- Ask whether the blouse piece is included. Most Banarasi sarees carry one at the end of the length, but not every listing says so and it changes what you are comparing.
- A Silk Mark tag certifies that the fibre is real silk. It says nothing about handloom against powerloom, and nothing about the zari. Ask those separately.
Weight, customs and getting it here intact
Weight
Light for what it looks like. A pure katan silk handloom Banarasi with blouse piece is about 540g, measured rather than estimated, from a seller that publishes per-product weights. Heavy-zari pieces run to roughly 700-950g. Two or three sarees still sit inside the cheapest band to most countries.
Volume
Silk folds small and compresses safely, so this is one of the few garment categories where volumetric weight almost never decides the price. We repack out of the shop box, which usually takes a saree parcel down a band.
Customs
A handloom Banarasi can be expensive enough to clear your de-minimis threshold on its own, so duty is worth budgeting for rather than discovering. Check what your destination allows.
Condition
Zari snags on everything, including other zari. Sarees are wrapped individually in tissue rather than packed face to face, and heavy brocade travels flat rather than tightly rolled.

Questions
How do I know a Banarasi saree is genuine?
Look at the back of the fabric. Handloom weaving leaves floating threads across the reverse and the motif shows on both faces; a powerloom or printed copy has a flat, clean back. Then check the zari for brassiness and for cracking at the folds. Both checks work from photographs if you ask the seller for them.
Is a Silk Mark tag enough?
It confirms the fibre is real silk and nothing more. It does not certify handloom, it does not certify zari, and it does not certify that the saree came from Varanasi. Ask the seller about those three separately.
How much does it cost to ship a saree?
Less than most people expect. A Banarasi is around half a kilo, so a single saree sits at the bottom of the weight table on your destination page and the second and third add very little. Put a real weight into the calculator for the binding figure.
Can I order from several Varanasi sellers at once?
Yes, and it is the cheaper way to buy. Each seller delivers domestically to your Indian address, everything waits free for 30 days, and one box flies instead of three.
Will the colour look like the photograph?
On anything with zari, not reliably. Metallic thread photographs brighter than it looks in the room. Ask for a picture of the actual piece in daylight before paying for an expensive one; good Varanasi sellers expect the question.
