Buying a Kanchipuram (Kanjeevaram) silk saree from India when you live abroad

There is one physical test that separates a real Kanjeevaram from a copy, and you can run it from a photograph.

Yes — you can buy kanchipuram (kanjeevaram) sarees from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.

Why this is hard to buy where you are

Kancheepuram Silk is GI-registered and the serious sellers are all still in Tamil Nadu. The silk houses there classify stock the way the craft actually works, by zari grade and by weave construction, so you can see exactly what you are paying for. That vocabulary rarely survives the journey to a shop abroad, where a Kanjeevaram is simply an expensive saree on a rail.

Where to buy it

ShopWhat they are good for
NalliThe reference point. Lets you filter by zari grade, pure gold against half-fine against none, which is the clearest statement of what your money buys.
RmKVClassifies by weave construction: korvai, buttas, bridal. The technically meaningful split rather than a colour grid.
Kumaran SilksChennai, straightforward pure Kancheepuram silk, mid to upper pricing with a simple buying flow.
PothysThe broadest price ladder of the big houses, which makes it the easiest place to learn what each tier looks like before committing.
KankatalaFamily retailer that is explicit about zari purity in its own descriptions. If any of these cannot deliver to your country, your Indian address makes it a domestic order.

The Chennai silk houses each handle overseas orders differently and the answer changes. Sending to your India Rabbit address keeps it a domestic purchase and keeps you out of that conversation.

What to check before you order

  • The border-to-body join is the definitive test. A real Kanjeevaram is woven korvai, border and body made separately and interlocked thread by thread. At the join you should see a tight interlace. A stitched or glued seam means a machine-made copy.
  • Ask for the zari grade by name. Pure gold zari is a silver core with gold plating; half-fine and imitation zari are different products at very different prices, and a good seller will tell you which without hesitating.
  • Weight is itself a signal. A genuine six-yard pure Kanjeevaram is noticeably heavy, around 700-950g and more for a dense bridal piece. Something sold as Kanjeevaram that feels light deserves a question.
  • A Silk Mark tag confirms silk purity only. It does not certify handloom, zari or Kanchipuram origin, and the Silk Mark organisation will test a piece free at its chapters if you doubt it.
  • Decide before ordering whether you need the blouse stitched. Most sarees ship with an unstitched blouse piece, and finding a tailor who can cut a silk blouse is harder abroad than at home.

Weight, customs and getting it here intact

Weight

Heavier than any other saree in this catalogue, and deliberately so. Roughly 700-950g for a genuine six-yard piece, above a kilo for dense bridal zari. One saree is still a small parcel; three is where the per-saree cost drops sharply.

Volume

Dense silk, so the box is small relative to the weight and volumetric almost never governs. The opposite of a lehenga, where the air in the skirt sets the price.

Customs

Bridal Kanjeevarams carry high declared values and will usually clear your threshold, so expect duty at that tier. The rate and the threshold are set where you live, not here; your destination page carries the figures we hold. Check what your destination allows.

Condition

Real zari is metal and it abrades. Each saree is wrapped alone, folded along its existing creases rather than refolded, and bridal pieces are boxed flat so the pallu is not crushed against the border.

Questions

What is the korvai test?

Korvai is the technique where border and body are woven separately and interlocked thread by thread with a third shuttle. At the join you should see a tight interlaced weave, not a seam. If the border looks stitched or glued on, it is an imitation rather than a Kanjeevaram.

Does a Silk Mark tag prove it is a real Kanjeevaram?

No. Silk Mark certifies that the fibre is genuine silk. It says nothing about whether the saree is handloom, whether the zari is real, or whether it came from Kanchipuram at all. Those are three separate questions for the seller.

Why is it so much heavier than other sarees?

Because the silk is heavier and the zari is metal. That weight is a feature of the craft rather than a flaw, and it is one of the simplest authenticity signals you have. A light Kanjeevaram is a warning.

How long should I allow?

Six weeks is comfortable for a stock piece. For a specific colour or a bridal weave made to order, three months, because the weaving itself takes time before anything reaches us.

Can I buy from more than one silk house?

Yes. Each delivers to your Indian address as an ordinary domestic order, everything gathers in your suite, and the whole set ships together as one consignment.
