Buying a sherwani from India when you live abroad
The one garment where what you cannot see from a photograph is what decides whether it was worth the money.
Yes — you can buy sherwanis from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.
Why this is hard to buy where you are
A sherwani lives or dies on construction. Hand zardozi against machine threadwork, and a proper inner canvas against fused-only interlining, are the two things that separate a piece that holds its shape through a long wedding day from one that bubbles at the lapel by the evening. Neither is visible in a product photograph, and neither tends to be explained by a shop abroad that stocks six of them. Indian groomwear sellers are used to being asked.
Where to buy it
| Shop | What they are good for |
|---|---|
| Manyavar | The default groomwear name in India, with sherwani and indo-western as a core line and consistent sizing across a very large range. |
| Tasva | Splits sherwanis, indo-westerns and achkans properly, which most sellers do not bother to do and which genuinely changes what you are buying. |
| Utsav Fashion | Breadth at the low-to-mid budget, with thousands of pieces listed and live pricing. |
| Kalki Fashion | Wedding-occasion focus with a physical store network supporting the online range. |
| Aza Fashions | Designer labels rather than house brand, for a specific name. If any of these cannot deliver to your country, your Indian address makes it a domestic order. |
Groomwear sellers each take a different view of overseas orders and that view changes. Sending to your India Rabbit address keeps it domestic and avoids the question at the point where you least want a surprise.
What to check before you order
- Hand zardozi and machine threadwork cost very different amounts. Machine work is perfectly uniform; hand work varies slightly and sits raised off the surface. Ask which it is, because the listing often will not say.
- Ask whether there is an inner canvas or whether the structure is fused only. A canvassed sherwani holds its collar and chest shape; a fused one bubbles and loses line, and you can feel the difference at the lapel.
- Sherwanis sold as silk are very often silk blend or polyester with a silk finish. Read the composition rather than the title.
- Confirm what comes with it. A sherwani is usually sold with a churidar or trouser and sometimes a dupatta or stole, and two listings at the same price can contain different numbers of pieces.
- Order early enough to have it fitted where you live. The shoulders and the sleeve length are the parts a local tailor can fix; the chest structure is not, so get that right at the point of ordering.
Weight, customs and getting it here intact
Weight
No seller we found publishes a figure, and the range is wide: a plain sherwani is a normal garment while a heavily embroidered bridal piece with a dupatta and churidar is several kilos. Ask for the weight before you buy at the embroidered end, because at that end it is the garment that sets the shipping cost.
Volume
Structured and boxy rather than compressible. We fold at the existing creases rather than forcing it smaller, so this is a category where the box size is honest rather than something we can compress away.
Customs
Groomwear carries high declared values, so expect duty to apply almost anywhere. Budget for it as part of the cost of the outfit rather than meeting it at the door. Check what your destination allows.
Condition
Zardozi and dabka work catch on everything. The embroidered front is wrapped in tissue and the whole garment is boxed flat rather than rolled, so the structure arrives as it left.
Sherwanis by country
Sherwanis to the UK
Southall, Wembley, Leicester's Golden Mile and Birmingham's Soho Road sell groomwear, but an Indian website offers far more range at a fraction of the high-street price, from Jodhpuri cuts to full wedding sets with stole, safa and mojari. A sherwani is structured, so check the size chart in centimetres rather than your usual UK size, and order early: we photograph it on arrival, and a return or exchange to the seller is only possible while it is still in India. Most UK orders are wedding shopping, bought over several weeks and sent as one box. Above £135 the courier collects 20% VAT and any duty before delivery. Since 15 July 2026 the UK–India trade agreement has cut or removed duty on many goods made in India where the origin rules are met. VAT still applies.

Questions
How do I tell hand embroidery from machine?
Machine work is perfectly regular and flat. Hand zardozi and dabka vary slightly from motif to motif and stand up off the fabric. Ask the seller directly and ask for a close photograph; it is the single biggest difference in what you are paying for.
What is an inner canvas and why does it matter?
It is an interlining that holds the collar and chest shape. Without it the structure is glued, and glued construction bubbles and loses its line with wear. It is the difference between a sherwani that looks right all day and one that does not.
Can a tailor abroad alter it?
Sleeves and shoulders, yes. The chest and collar structure, not really. Buy the right chest and have the rest adjusted where you live.
How early should I order?
Three months before the wedding if the piece is being made or needs real alteration, six weeks for stock. Indian sellers and Indian couriers are both busiest in exactly the weeks most weddings are shopped for.
Can the whole party order together?
Yes, and it is the sensible way. Everything for one wedding goes to the same Indian address, waits free for 30 days while the rest arrives, and ships as a single consignment.
