Buying a Kerala half saree or pattu pavadai from abroad
The half saree for a daughter's function — sized properly, in real kasavu, from the shops that make them for it.
Yes — you can buy Kerala half sarees from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.
Why this is hard to buy where you are
Half sarees and pattu pavadai are children's and young women's wear, which makes them the hardest Kerala garment to buy from a distance and the one most often needed at short notice. Diaspora shops stock adult sizes and a token children's rail. Kerala shops carry the full age range because they sell to families preparing for functions every week of the year. And sizing is the whole problem: a growing child measured six months before the function is a different child on the day.
Where to buy it
| Shop | What they are good for |
|---|---|
| Kalyan Silks | Full age range in kasavu and traditional styles, and the easiest sizing information to work with. |
| Jayalakshmi Silks | Broad range across price points, which matters for something that will be worn a handful of times. |
| Parthas | Traditional Kerala styling rather than fashion cuts, if that is what the function calls for. |
| Amazon.in and Myntra | The widest choice and the most photographs, which is what you need when you cannot hold the garment. Also where the cheaper everyday pieces are. |
| Haradhi and NakshatraKids | Two Kerala kids-wear specialists — Palakkad and Thrissur — selling readymade kasavu and pattu pavadai by age rather than by saree length. Narrower than the chains, and easier to size from abroad. |
All of them deliver to an Indian address. Yours is free, it takes a minute to set up, and it turns the whole Kerala market into a domestic shop for you.
What to check before you order
- Measure, do not guess an age. Indian children's sizing is given in years but cut to Indian measurements, and the listed chest and length are the numbers that matter.
- Order a size up for anything more than two months ahead. This is the most common regret in this category by a wide margin.
- Pattu pavadai is silk and sits differently from a cotton kasavu half saree. Both are traditional; they are not the same garment and photographs flatten the difference.
- Check whether the blouse or top is stitched or unstitched. For children's wear it is more often pre-stitched, but not always, and a tailor at your end adds a week.
- Function dates cluster. Around Onam and Vishu the good sizes go first, and restocking is not quick.
Weight, customs and getting it here intact
Weight
Light — usually 250–500g a piece, which makes this one of the cheapest categories to bring out of India. It is also why it rarely justifies its own parcel: send it with everything else.
Volume
Small and flat. Several pieces add almost nothing to a box you are already sending, so a half saree is the classic thing to add to a consolidated order.
Customs
Children's clothing is unremarkable at customs and low-value enough that it often falls under the duty threshold on its own. In a larger box it is assessed as part of the whole. Check what your destination allows.
Condition
Silk pattu pavadai should not sit compressed for weeks. If you are consolidating over a long window, tell us and we will keep it packed properly rather than at the bottom of a box.

Questions
How do I get the size right from abroad?
Work from the chest and length measurements in the listing rather than the stated age, measure the child rather than estimating, and go a size up if the function is more than two months away.
What is the difference between a half saree and a pattu pavadai?
A pattu pavadai is the silk skirt-and-blouse set; a half saree adds the draped piece and is generally for older girls. Both appear under Kerala and South Indian styling, and the listings are not always careful about the distinction.
Is it worth shipping something this light on its own?
Rarely. It is worth almost nothing in weight terms, which is exactly why it should travel with the rest of a family order rather than alone.
Can I order for a function six months away?
Yes, and buy a size up if you do. Storage is free for 30 days and extendable to 90, so you can order early and still ship close to the date.
