The problem with buying from home

A boutique in Thrissur or Kottayam will courier anywhere in India overnight and nowhere outside it. The silk houses are built the same way: Kalyan, Seematti, Jayalakshmi and Parthas all deliver across India as a matter of course, and whatever any of them does about an international order varies by shop, by country and by month. So the usual answer has been to wait for someone to visit, or to ask a relative to carry it.

Order online, order over the phone, or send a shop your measurements on WhatsApp and let them courier the finished piece — all of it comes to your suite at our warehouse in Kerala. Much of this trade never touches a website. A shop sends photographs, you choose, they confirm a price and post it. Can I buy from a Kerala boutique if I live in the USA, the Gulf or Britain?

This is the one case where check at the checkout is no help, because most of these sellers do not have one. A Kerala boutique is often an Instagram account, a WhatsApp number and a shop on a side street in Thrissur or Kozhikode — you agree the piece in a chat, you pay by UPI or bank transfer, and it is posted to an Indian address. There is no international shipping option to look for, because there is no shipping page.

That is precisely why the Indian address works here. Give the seller your address in Kerala with your suite code and you are an ordinary domestic customer, which is the only kind many of them can serve. Three things make it go smoothly wherever you live: ask for photographs of the actual piece rather than the catalogue shot, agree the price and the courier before you pay, and tell them to write your suite code on the parcel.
