Kerala T-Shirt and Malayali Merch Brands

The brands people actually mean

Kerala has grown a whole shelf of small clothing and merchandise labels in the last few years, and almost all of them sell the same thing in different handwriting: being Malayali, printed on cotton. The ones with their own online shops are worth knowing by name.

• MyDesignation — the best known of them, out of Thiruvananthapuram, with shops in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode and Bangalore. Graphic tees, shirts, hoodies and bottomwear rather than tees alone.
• Film Patients — Malayalam cinema and pop culture. Tees, mugs, posters, badges, phone covers. If the joke needs you to have seen the film, this is the shop.
• KEMEN — oversized and regular tees built around Malayalam phrases and Kerala heritage.
• MAGV — heavyweight oversized tees; Theyyam, festivals, cinema, nostalgia.
• NOOOLED — heavy streetwear, tees and hoodies and joggers, with a Malayali range inside it.
• Thach — custom streetwear and made-to-order merchandise, including college and event runs. The name is the Malayalam for stitch. Their site is thach.in; there is an unrelated American label with a similar name, so check you are on the right one.
• Via Kerala — the widest range beyond clothing: tees and kurtas, but also Malayalam typography pieces, magnets, stationery, cushion covers, coffee table books. Shops in Ernakulam, Mattancherry and Thekkady.
• Parishkaaree — Calicut. Print to order across tees, caps, posters, magnets, coasters and mugs, with Malayalam pop culture running through it.
• Firebox — Fort Kochi, with a boutique in the David Hall compound. Kathakali, Theyyam, vallamkali and Malayalam script drawn as artwork rather than as slogans.
• Pomelow — Ernakulam. Premium tees led by fit and fabric rather than by Malayalam text, for anyone who wants the cut without the caption.
• Thampz — Kerala-run but pan-Indian in subject: destination travel merchandise, Kerala among Ladakh, Himachal and Goa, and a long tail of magnets, stickers, keyrings and patches.

There are more, and they appear and disappear quickly — a good number of this trade is an Instagram page and a printer. If you are buying from one of those rather than from a shop with a checkout, the Instagram sellers guide is the one you want.

Why this is the category that strands people

A Malayalam-slogan tee has no substitute where you live. You can buy a shirt in Dubai or Houston or Dublin; you cannot buy that shirt. The joke is in Malayalam, the film is one nobody around you has seen, and the only shops making it are in Kerala and set up to deliver inside India, because that is who walks past them.

Shipping policies in this trade change often and vary by country, so check at the checkout. What is reliably true is the shape of it: some of these brands post abroad, some will arrange it over WhatsApp if you ask, and several are built purely for domestic delivery. You find out at the last step, after you have chosen.

What changes with an Indian address

You stop being the awkward order. Your delivery address is your name, your suite code and our warehouse in Kerala, which to the shop is an ordinary Kerala address — so you use the normal checkout, the normal domestic rate, and the normal returns window, instead of negotiating a one-off international order in a chat. We photograph what arrives, hold it free for 30 days, and send it on when you are ready.

It also removes the part of this that is genuinely annoying: free shipping inside India is nearly universal in this trade and nearly always has a minimum order. Three tees from three different brands, each under the threshold, is three shipping charges and three parcels. Sent to one Indian address they are three free deliveries and one box.

Buy several, send once

This is the clearest consolidation case we handle. A t-shirt weighs almost nothing and takes almost no space, so the first one costs what the box costs and the next five cost very little more. One tee flown on its own is the worst value in this entire catalogue; six tees, two mugs and a poster in one carton is among the best. Put a realistic weight into the calculator before you decide how much to buy — the answer is usually buy more at once, not buy less.

Sizes

Indian sizing runs smaller than European, British or American sizing, and the oversized cuts most of these brands sell are drafted against Indian bodies to begin with. Read the centimetre chest measurement on the product page and compare it to a shirt you already own, rather than ordering the letter you usually wear.

This catalogue spikes twice a year, and both spikes have a deadline attached. If a tee is meant to be worn on the day, or carried home in a suitcase on a trip, work backwards from the date and allow for the shop to make it — several of these brands print to order, which adds days before anything reaches us.
