Send Onam, Vishu and Christmas Gifts Abroad

Festivals are the one time of year when what you send matters more than what it costs. Order Kerala gifts to your free Indian address, or have family in Kerala send to it, and we forward everything as one parcel — in time, if you start early enough.

When should I order for Onam? Two to three weeks earlier than you think, because the fortnight before Onam is peak season for every carrier out of India and customs is slower. Message us for the ship-by date for your country.

Start earlier than you think

The weeks before Onam, Vishu and Christmas are the busiest of the year for every carrier out of India, and customs queues lengthen with the volume. A shipment that clears in a week in March can take considerably longer in late August. Order two to three weeks earlier than you would normally, and ask us for the ship-by date for your destination before the rush starts.

What people send

Onam sadhya provisions, banana chips, sharkara varatti and Kerala snacks; payasam mixes and jaggery; kasavu for the family; Vishu kani items and Vishukkaineettam gifts; Christmas cake, wine mix and plum-cake ingredients; and Malayalam books and calendars for the new year.

For the clothes and the lamp, see our notes on the Kerala half saree and the nilavilakku brass lamp for the Vishu kani.

Food is the part that needs care

Packaged, sealed, factory-labelled food generally forwards without difficulty. Home-made items, anything containing fresh or unprocessed plant material, and meat or dairy are restricted or prohibited in most destinations — Australia and New Zealand are the strictest, and refuse homemade food outright. Check the prohibited and restricted list for your country before ordering.

One parcel for the whole family

Relatives in Kerala can send to your suite code, or drop parcels at our warehouse in Kerala. Everything gathers under your account and ships as a single consolidated box, which is far cheaper than five people posting five parcels.

Questions

Can I send Kerala snacks and sadhya items?

Packaged, sealed and properly labelled food is generally accepted. Home-made food is accepted in some countries and refused in others (Australia and New Zealand refuse it however well sealed), and fresh produce and anything with unprocessed plant material is restricted almost everywhere — check your destination page first.

Can my family in Kerala send gifts to my address?

Yes. They can order to your suite code or hand parcels in at our warehouse in Kerala, and everything ships together under your account.

Will the recipient pay customs duty on a gift?

Possibly, depending on declared value and destination — several countries have a lower threshold for gifts than for goods. Our country pages set out the thresholds.

Can you gift-wrap or include a note?

Tell us on WhatsApp when you request shipping and we will do what we can.
