Buying a set mundu from Kerala when you live abroad
Mundum neriyathum — the two-piece Kerala set, bought where it is actually woven and sent wherever you are.
Yes — you can buy set mundu from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.
Why this is hard to buy where you are
The set mundu is the garment most often got wrong from a distance. It is two pieces — the mundu worn below and the neriyathu draped above — and half of what is sold abroad as a set mundu is a single-piece saree cut to imitate the look. The shops that carry proper sets are Kerala shops and the handloom societies behind them, and their sizing conventions, border widths and kara colours are described in terms that assume you can see the cloth. Nothing about that transfers to a diaspora rack, which is why people who know the difference order from Kerala.
Where to buy it
| Shop | What they are good for |
|---|---|
| Kalyan Silks | The widest set mundu range of any chain, across price points from everyday cotton to heavy bridal. |
| Parthas | A Trivandrum institution, and unusually strong on traditional Kerala wear rather than occasion silks. |
| Seematti | Good on the dressier end — tissue and silk-blend sets for weddings and receptions. |
| Handloom societies | Balaramapuram, Kuthampully and Chendamangalam sell sets through marketplaces rather than their own sites. This is where the genuinely handwoven pieces are. |
| Amazon.in | The broadest single catalogue, and the easiest place to compare kara widths and prices across many sellers at once. |
Every one of these sells to an Indian address, which is exactly what we give you. The order becomes an ordinary Kerala delivery and what the shop does or does not do internationally stops being your problem.
What to check before you order
- Check the listing says two pieces. "Set saree" and "settu saree" sometimes mean a single-piece saree styled to look like a set — a real mundum neriyathum is sold as mundu plus neriyathu.
- The kara is the border, and its width is the main thing that separates an everyday set from an occasion one. Listings give it in inches; four inches and above reads as formal.
- Puliyilakara — the tamarind-leaf border — is a specific traditional pattern, not a generic description. If that is what you want, search the word rather than browsing.
- Most sets include an unstitched blouse piece. A few do not, and for a wedding that is worth confirming before you order rather than after.
- Cotton sets crease hard in transit and press out fine. Tissue and silk-blend sets do not forgive creasing in the same way — worth paying for the better-packed seller.
Weight, customs and getting it here intact
Weight
A cotton set runs 500–900g for the two pieces together, a little more than a single saree. Four or five sets still fit in one consolidated box, which is the usual shape of a wedding order.
Volume
Sets fold flat and pack dense, so you pay for actual weight rather than volume. That makes them one of the cheaper things per item to bring out of India.
Customs
A set mundu is a textile like any other and clears easily nearly everywhere. Duty follows your country's threshold on declared value, and cotton and silk are often rated differently. Check what your destination allows.
Condition
Ask the seller for a plastic-free inner wrap if the set is tissue. Zari tarnishes against some packing materials over a long transit, and it is the one avoidable way a new set arrives looking old.

Questions
What is the difference between a set mundu and a kasavu saree?
A kasavu saree is one piece worn as a saree. A set mundu, or mundum neriyathum, is two — the mundu below and the neriyathu above. Both can be kasavu; the word describes the cream-and-gold cloth, not the cut.
Can I order a set mundu from Kerala to my country?
Yes. You buy from the Kerala shop using the free Indian address we give you, and we forward the parcel to you. The shop is making a domestic delivery, so its own international policy never comes into it.
How do I know a set is genuinely handwoven?
Handloom pieces are usually sold under the society or village name — Balaramapuram, Kuthampully, Chendamangalam — rather than a brand. Power-loom copies are sold on the look alone, and the listing will not name a weaving centre.
Is one box enough for a whole wedding order?
Usually. Five or six sets and a few sarees fit comfortably, and storage is free for 30 days so you can keep buying across shops and ship once when the list is done.
