Buying a kasavu saree from Kerala when you live abroad

The cream-and-gold handloom of Kerala, bought from the shops that actually sell it, and sent to wherever you are.

Yes — you can buy kasavu sarees from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.

Why this is hard to buy where you are

Kasavu is one of the few things that is genuinely hard to buy well outside India. Diaspora shops abroad carry a narrow selection at a wide markup, and what they call kasavu is often a printed imitation rather than the real cotton handloom with a woven zari border. The shops that carry the real range — the big Kerala silk houses and the small handloom societies in Balaramapuram, Kuthampully and Chendamangalam — sell mainly to people standing in front of them.

Where to buy it

ShopWhat they are good for
Kalyan SilksThe largest chain in Kerala, with the widest range of kasavu and wedding silks. Their site lists far more than any diaspora shop stocks.
SeemattiLong-established Kerala silk house, strong on bridal and occasion wear.
Jayalakshmi SilksBig Kerala retailer with a deep saree range across price points.
ParthasTrivandrum institution, particularly for traditional Kerala wear and set mundu.
Amazon.in and MyntraWhere the handloom societies and smaller weavers sell. Cheaper, and where the genuinely traditional pieces often are. If they cannot deliver to you, your Indian address makes the point moot.

Some of these will ship internationally to some countries and not others, and the policies change. Put your India Rabbit address in at checkout and the question stops mattering — it is a domestic Kerala delivery as far as the shop is concerned.

What to check before you order

  • Kasavu is cotton, not silk. If a listing says "kasavu silk saree" it is usually a silk saree in kasavu colours, which is a different garment at a different price.
  • Real zari is a metallic thread border; the cheaper imitations are printed or use a synthetic tape. Photographs rarely tell you which — the product description usually does.
  • A set mundu (mundum neriyathum) is two pieces, not one. Check which you are buying, especially for a wedding.
  • Sizes barely matter for a saree, but blouse pieces do. Most listings include an unstitched blouse piece; a few do not.
  • Order well before Onam or a wedding date. Kerala retailers and Kerala couriers are both at capacity in the same weeks.

Weight, customs and getting it here intact

Weight

A cotton kasavu saree with its blouse piece typically weighs 400–700g. Three or four fit comfortably in a single consolidated box, which is where consolidation pays for itself — one box of four sarees costs far less than four separate parcels.

Volume

Sarees fold flat and are dense enough that volumetric weight almost never applies, unlike most clothing orders.

Customs

Textiles are one of the more straightforward categories at customs almost everywhere, but duty depends on the declared value and your country's de-minimis threshold. Silk and cotton are usually treated differently. Check what your destination allows.

Condition

Kasavu creases. It arrives folded as the shop packed it, and a press on arrival is normal rather than a sign of damage.

Kasavu Sarees to the UK

The UK has a long-settled Malayali community, concentrated around London, Birmingham, Manchester and the NHS towns, and a wedding and Onam calendar that runs to the same dates as Kerala's. What that means in practice is a rush: the same fortnight that Kerala's silk houses are busiest is when UK orders peak. Ordering three or four weeks earlier than feels necessary is the single most useful thing you can do.

Transit: typically 4 to 10 business days once the box leaves our warehouse in Kerala. Shipping to the UK · What the UK will not let in

Is there duty on a saree into the UK?

The UK charges VAT from the first pound on imported goods, with no de-minimis allowance, and duty above a threshold on top. Budget for it rather than being surprised — it is charged on the declared value plus shipping.

When should I order for an autumn wedding?

Earlier than you think. Kerala retailers and Kerala couriers are both at capacity in the weeks around Onam, and that is the same window most UK wedding shopping happens in.

Questions

Can I order a kasavu saree from Kerala to my country?

Yes. You order from the Kerala shop as if you were in Kerala, using the free Indian address we give you, and we forward the parcel on. Whether the shop itself ships abroad stops being relevant.

Is it cheaper than buying from an Indian shop in my city?

Usually, and the range is not comparable. Diaspora shops carry what sells fastest; the Kerala retailers carry everything. Where the saving disappears is on a single low-value saree — the shipping is worth it when you consolidate several things into one box.

How do I know I am getting real kasavu and not a print?

Read the fabric description rather than looking at the photograph. Genuine kasavu is cotton handloom with a woven zari border; anything described as printed, or as a "kasavu-style" silk, is a different thing.

How long does it take?

It depends on your destination and on how long you leave parcels with us to consolidate. The transit time for your country is on its destination page; storage is free for the first 30 days, so waiting to combine orders costs nothing.

Can several of us send wedding shopping to the same address?

Yes, and for a wedding it is usually the sensible way to do it — everything bought for one occasion goes into one box rather than five parcels. The Kerala wedding saree page covers the timing and the duty side of a full family order.
