Getting Malayalam books when you live outside Kerala
Malayalam publishing barely exists outside India. This is how you reach it from anywhere.
Yes — you can buy Malayalam books from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.
Why this is hard to buy where you are
Malayalam books are the clearest case for forwarding of anything we handle. There is essentially no international retail for them — no Amazon storefront in your country carries the Malayalam list, diaspora bookshops stock a handful of titles, and the publishers sell into an Indian market that has never needed to post abroad. Parents trying to teach children to read Malayalam, and readers who want a new Malayalam novel rather than a translation, have almost no other route.
Where to buy it
| Shop | What they are good for |
|---|---|
| DC Books | The largest Malayalam publisher and bookseller. The widest general list — fiction, non-fiction, children's books, and the standard editions of most Malayalam literature. |
| Mathrubhumi Books | Strong on literary fiction, essays and journalism, and the Mathrubhumi periodicals. |
| Current Books | Long-established Kerala publisher and retailer. |
| Amazon.in | Carries a large share of the Malayalam catalogue including school and exam material, often faster than the publisher sites. |
These are Indian retailers selling to Indian addresses. With an India Rabbit address you are simply one of their domestic customers.
What to check before you order
- Malayalam titles are often listed in transliteration rather than script, and spellings vary. If a search fails, try the author's name instead of the title.
- School and exam material sells out near the start of the Indian academic year. Order early if you need prescribed texts.
- Children's books and readers are the single most common Malayalam order we forward, and the most likely to be out of stock in the diaspora.
- Periodicals and magazines can be bought as single issues from most of these retailers, which is usually simpler than arranging a subscription abroad.
Weight, customs and getting it here intact
Weight
Books are heavy and dense. A typical Malayalam paperback runs 200–400g and hardbacks considerably more, so a box of ten can pass 4kg quickly. This is the category where checking the rate before you order matters most.
Volume
Books are the one thing where volumetric weight is never the problem — they are dense, so you pay for actual weight. That works in your favour compared with clothing.
Customs
Printed books are among the most freely importable goods there are, and many countries apply little or no duty to them. Declared honestly as books, they clear easily. Check what your destination allows.
Condition
Ask for extra padding on hardbacks. Corner damage in transit is the most common complaint on book shipments and the easiest to prevent.

Questions
Can I get Malayalam books delivered to my country?
Yes. Order from DC Books, Mathrubhumi, Current Books or Amazon.in to your free Indian address, and we forward the parcel to you. This is one of the categories where forwarding is not just cheaper but effectively the only route.
Is it worth it for one or two books?
Often not, because books are heavy relative to their value. Build an order — this is a category where people typically send twenty or thirty at a time, and consolidation is what makes it sensible.
Can I get Malayalam school and exam books?
Yes, and it is a common order. Buy early in the Indian academic year; prescribed texts sell out.
What about magazines and periodicals?
Single issues can be ordered from most Malayalam publishers and forwarded like anything else. A rolling subscription is harder, because the publisher would be posting to us repeatedly rather than once.
Can I order PSC and competitive exam material?
Yes, and it is one of the steadier orders we see. Kerala PSC guides, textbooks and question banks are all sold by the same retailers and forward like any other book.
Will the books arrive damaged?
Rarely, and almost always at the corners of hardbacks. Ask for extra padding on the pre-alert and we will pack accordingly — it is the single most preventable complaint on book shipments.
