Buying Indian ethnic wear from India rather than from a shop abroad
The range an Indian site carries and a diaspora shop cannot, at Indian prices, sent to your door.
Yes — you can buy Indian ethnic wear from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.
Why this is hard to buy where you are
This is the largest category we handle and the one where the gap is widest. A shop abroad stocks what turns over fastest, in a handful of sizes, at two to four times the Indian price. Myntra, Ajio, Meesho and the thousands of sellers behind them carry a range no physical shop can hold, and where they cannot deliver to your country your Indian address settles it. The people who feel this most are the ones with a specific need: a wedding guest with a colour to match, a groom who wants a sherwani that is not the three his local shop has, a mother buying for children who outgrow last year's.
Where to buy it
| Shop | What they are good for |
|---|---|
| Myntra | The widest ethnic range online, and the best filtering by occasion, colour and price. Where most orders start. |
| Ajio | Strong on contemporary and fusion ethnic, often cheaper than Myntra for the same look. |
| Meesho | Cheapest, and the place to find small sellers and unbranded pieces. Sizing is the least reliable of the three. |
| Amazon.in | Everything, including the brands the others do not carry, with the most predictable returns process inside India. |
| Tata CLiQ, Nykaa Fashion | Better for the premium and designer end, and for occasion wear where you care about the label. |
None of these routinely deliver outside India. With your India Rabbit address they do not have to — the order is a domestic one and we handle the rest.
What to check before you order
- Indian sizing runs smaller than UK or US sizing, and inconsistently between sellers. Read the seller's own measurement chart in centimetres rather than trusting the S/M/L, every time.
- Returns inside India are easy and free; returns from abroad are not. It is usually cheaper to order two sizes of one thing than to get it wrong once — you can send the spare back to the seller from our warehouse while it is still within their window.
- Unstitched, semi-stitched and readymade are three different products. Semi-stitched needs a tailor at your end, which is fine if you have one and a problem if you do not.
- Lehengas and heavily worked pieces are much heavier than they look — often 2 to 3kg for one outfit. Check the weight before assuming a saving.
- Photographs on the cheaper marketplaces are frequently the manufacturer's, not the seller's. Buyer reviews with customer photos are the only reliable guide to what actually arrives.
Weight, customs and getting it here intact
Weight
A cotton kurta set is 400-600g; a worked lehenga with a dupatta can reach 3kg on its own. This is the category where weight varies most, so price the parcel before you commit to a big order.
Volume
Ethnic wear is the main category where volumetric weight bites. Lehengas and anything with net or a stiff skirt take up far more box than they weigh, and you are charged on whichever is greater. Ordering three light kurtas alongside one lehenga is usually free carriage for the kurtas.
Customs
Textiles are routine at customs almost everywhere, but duty is charged on declared value and every country has a threshold below which nothing is due. A large wedding order will usually cross it; three kurtas usually will not. Check what your destination allows.
Condition
Everything arrives as the seller packed it. Ask on the pre-alert if you want a garment repacked flat rather than compressed, which is worth doing for anything with heavy zari work.
Indian Ethnic Wear by country
Indian Ethnic Wear to the USA
The United States has the largest Indian population outside India and the most developed diaspora retail to go with it — which is exactly why people still order from India. The shops in Edison, Artesia or Devon Avenue are good, but they carry a fraction of what an Indian site does, and the mark-up on occasion wear is steep. What we forward to the US is overwhelmingly wedding and festival shopping, bought over weeks and sent as one box.
Transit: typically 4 to 12 business days once the box leaves our warehouse in Kerala. Shipping to the USA · What the USA will not let in
Will I pay duty on Indian clothes into the USA?
It depends on the declared value of the shipment against the current US threshold, and on how the goods are classified. A few kurtas usually clear without a charge; a full wedding order usually will not.
How long does it take to reach the US?
The transit estimate for your route is on the destination page, and the bigger variable is how long you leave parcels with us to consolidate. Storage is free for 30 days.
Indian Ethnic Wear to the UK
Britain has the oldest large Indian community in Europe, and Southall, Wembley, Leicester's Golden Mile and Birmingham's Soho Road sell ethnic wear well. What they cannot match is the range and the price of an Indian website: a lehenga, a silk saree or a wedding sherwani costs a fraction of the high-street price, and the choice runs to thousands rather than dozens. Most UK orders are wedding and Diwali shopping, bought over several weeks and sent as one box. For goods up to £135, UK VAT at 20% is normally charged by the seller at checkout; above £135, the courier collects VAT and any duty before delivery. Since 15 July 2026 the UK–India trade agreement has cut or removed duty on many goods made in India where the origin rules are met. VAT still applies.

Indian Ethnic Wear to Canada
Many people in Canada look for Indian outfits from India, and it is easy to see why. Brampton, Mississauga, Surrey, Calgary and Edmonton have Indian clothing shops, but not India's range or prices. Two Canadian things to plan around: winter, so order wedding-season outfits early, and the low duty threshold, which makes one consolidated box better value than several small parcels. Duty and GST usually apply to parcels valued above CAD 20, and genuine gifts up to CAD 60 may be exempt. Because the threshold is low, one consolidated box is better value than several small parcels.

Indian Ethnic Wear to the UAE
The UAE has the largest Malayali community outside India and Indian clothing shops from Karama to Bur Dubai. People still order from India for the range and the price, and because Kerala to the Gulf is our fastest route, an outfit for Onam, Eid, Diwali or a wedding back home can be ordered a few weeks ahead rather than months. Personal parcels valued up to AED 1,000 are generally duty-free. Above that, customs duty is typically 5% of the value including shipping, and 5% VAT applies.

Indian Ethnic Wear to Qatar
Indians are the largest nationality in Qatar, and Keralites a large part of that. Occasion wear is what people order from India, because the Indian range and price are hard to match in Doha: sarees, salwar suits, kurtas for Eid, Onam and weddings, and children's festival outfits. Personal parcels up to QAR 1,000 are generally duty-free; above that, customs duty is typically 5% of the value. Qatar has no VAT.

Indian Ethnic Wear to Australia
Harris Park in Sydney and Dandenong in Melbourne have Indian clothing shops, but the range on Indian sites is far wider and cheaper. Seasons are inverted, so winter wear is best bought during the Indian summer, and biosecurity checks anything with wood, cane or seeds in the trim. Plain clothing clears without trouble. GST and duty generally apply to goods valued over AUD 1,000. Australian biosecurity is the strictest of any country we ship to: wood, cane, seeds, honey and plant material are inspected and may be refused.

Questions
Can I order from Myntra or Ajio if I live abroad?
Yes, through your free Indian address. Neither delivers to most countries directly, but both deliver to us, and we forward the parcel on.
What if the size is wrong?
Order two sizes. Returns within India are free and easy, so you can return the one that does not fit from our warehouse while the seller's window is open — far cheaper than shipping it back from abroad afterwards.
Is it actually cheaper than buying locally?
On anything above a basic kurta, usually substantially, because you are paying Indian retail rather than diaspora retail. On a single cheap item the shipping can outweigh the saving, which is what consolidation is for.
How much does a lehenga weigh?
Often 2 to 3kg with its dupatta, and it takes up more box than its weight suggests. Price it on the calculator before ordering, and add lighter items to the same box — they travel almost free once the volume is paid for.
Can I have things tailored before they ship?
Tell us on the pre-alert if something needs looking at before it goes. Semi-stitched pieces are the usual case and are better dealt with at one end or the other, not halfway.
