Buying a lehenga from India when you live abroad

The one garment where buying from India is not about saving money so much as it is about having any real choice at all.

Yes — you can buy lehengas from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.

Why this is hard to buy where you are

A lehenga bought abroad is chosen from whatever a handful of shops imported this season. A lehenga bought in India is chosen from the entire market — designer studios, the wholesale markets of Chandni Chowk and Karol Bagh, and every marketplace label in between. For a wedding, where the garment is the photograph for the next fifty years, that difference in range matters more than the price difference. The price difference is usually substantial as well.

Where to buy it

ShopWhat they are good for
Kalki FashionBridal and occasion specialist with a deep lehenga range and detailed measurement charts, which matter more here than on any other garment.
Aza and Pernia's Pop-Up ShopWhere Indian designers sell directly. Expensive, and the only realistic route to a specific designer piece from abroad.
Manyavar and MoheyLarge chain, consistent sizing, strong on family occasion wear where several people need to be dressed to match.
Myntra and AjioThe broadest mid-market selection, and the best place to understand what a given price actually buys before committing to a studio.
Amazon.inWhere the Chandni Chowk and Surat wholesalers list. The value is real and so is the variance — read the fabric description closely. If any of these cannot deliver to your country, your Indian address makes it a domestic order.

Designer studios and marketplaces have different international policies and they change without notice. Ordering to your India Rabbit address avoids the question entirely and usually avoids the international shipping surcharge as well.

What to check before you order

  • A lehenga is three pieces — skirt, blouse and dupatta — and listings are not always clear about whether all three are included, or whether the blouse is stitched or an unstitched piece.
  • Most Indian lehengas ship semi-stitched, meaning the skirt is finished but the blouse is left with margin for a local tailor. Decide before you order whether you can have that altered where you live.
  • Ask for the actual weight before you buy anything heavily worked. A bridal lehenga with zardozi or heavy can-can lining can weigh five kilos, and that changes the shipping cost from an afterthought into a real line item.
  • Colour on screen is unreliable on anything with zari or sequins, far more than on plain fabric. Request a real photograph from the seller where the piece is expensive.
  • Order three to four months before the date if any alteration is involved, and no less than six weeks even if none is.

Weight, customs and getting it here intact

Weight

Enormous range, and it is the one thing worth checking before you buy. A light georgette lehenga is 800g-1.5kg. A worked bridal piece with lining is 3-6kg and occasionally more. At the heavy end the garment sets the shipping cost, so ask the seller for a weight rather than being surprised.

Volume

This is the category where volumetric weight genuinely bites. Can-can lining and net skirts are mostly air. We repack and compress what can safely be compressed, but a structured bridal skirt has a floor below which it should not be crushed, and we will not crush it.

Customs

High declared value means duty is a real consideration rather than a rounding error, and the threshold is your country's, not ours. Check what your destination allows.

Condition

Heavy work snags. Anything with zardozi, mirror or sequin detail is wrapped separately inside the box rather than packed against other garments, and we photograph it before it goes.

Lehengas by country

Lehengas to the USA

Edison, Jackson Heights, Devon Avenue and Fremont have bridal boutiques, but their lehengas are a small imported selection at American prices. From India you choose from the whole market, and the whole wedding party's outfits can travel in one box. A worked bridal lehenga can weigh several kilos, so ask the seller for the weight before you buy. There is no duty-free allowance for parcels from India: the USD 800 exemption was suspended in August 2025, and since 24 July 2026 Indian goods also carry an extra 10% duty on top of the normal rate. The courier collects it before delivery.

Lehengas to the UAE

Meena Bazaar in Bur Dubai and Karama have bridal shops, but a lehenga from India costs less and comes from a far wider choice. Kerala to the Gulf is our fastest route, so a lehenga for a wedding can be ordered weeks rather than months ahead, with time left for alterations. Personal parcels valued up to AED 1,000 are generally duty-free. Above that, customs duty is typically 5% of the value including shipping, and 5% VAT applies; a bridal lehenga is often above the limit.

Lehengas to Singapore

Serangoon Road and Little India have a few bridal shops, and renting is common because buying locally is expensive. Ordering from India puts the whole market and Indian prices within reach, and Singapore is one of our faster routes. GST applies to imported goods, including low-value parcels. Declare contents accurately; one consolidated box is simpler to declare than several small ones.

Lehengas to Australia

Harris Park in Sydney and Dandenong in Melbourne have bridal shops, but the range on Indian sites is far wider and cheaper. Plain and embroidered lehengas clear without trouble; trims made of wood, cane or seeds are what biosecurity looks at. GST and duty generally apply to goods valued over AUD 1,000. Australian biosecurity is the strictest of any country we ship to: wood, cane, seeds, honey and plant material are inspected and may be refused.

Lehengas to New Zealand

Auckland and Wellington have only a handful of shops selling lehengas, with a small range, so ordering from India and sending one box is the practical answer for a wedding. Up to NZ$1,000, Customs collects no duty and overseas sellers may charge 15% GST at checkout; since 1 April 2026 a small levy applies per parcel. Above NZ$1,000, Customs collects duty, GST and an entry charge. Biosecurity is as strict as Australia: wood, cane, seeds, honey and plant material are inspected.

Questions

Will a lehenga bought online from India fit me?

Semi-stitched pieces are designed to be altered and most are, which is the safest route if you have a tailor where you live. For ready-stitched, work strictly from the measurement chart rather than the size label, and allow time to have it taken in rather than let out.

How much does it cost to ship a bridal lehenga?

It depends almost entirely on the weight, which ranges from under a kilo to over five. The indicative bands on your destination page cover 1, 3, 5 and 10kg, and the calculator gives the binding figure once you know what the piece actually weighs.

Will I pay import duty on it?

Probably, on anything bridal. Duty is charged on declared value plus shipping against your country's de-minimis threshold, and a lehenga is usually well above it. Budget for it as part of the cost of the garment rather than as a surprise at the door.

Can I have the whole wedding party's outfits sent together?

Yes, and that is the sensible way to do it. Everything ordered for one wedding goes to the same Indian address, waits free for 30 days while the rest arrives, and ships as one consignment instead of six.

How early should I order?

Three to four months before the date if anything needs altering, six weeks at the absolute minimum if not. Indian retailers and Indian couriers are both at their busiest in exactly the weeks most weddings are being shopped for.
