Buying Indian wedding invitations from India when you live abroad

The first thing you buy for the wedding, ordered from the place the whole trade lives in — and the one order where weight decides everything.

Yes — you can buy Indian wedding invitations from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.

Why this is hard to buy where you are

Indian wedding cards are an industry of their own. Sivakasi and the Chandni Chowk card market print a large share of what the country sends out, in ranges and price brackets with no equivalent abroad. An Indian address opens up the printer whose catalogue arrives on WhatsApp, the Sivakasi wholesaler who quotes per hundred rather than per card, the press your family has used for thirty years. Those work in rupees at domestic prices, and a wedding order is large enough that the difference is real money.

Where to buy it

Sivakasi printersTamil Nadu prints an enormous share of India's cards, and the trade there quotes per hundred, not per card. Where a printer cannot ship to you, an Indian address makes it an ordinary local job.
The Delhi card marketChandni Chowk and the wholesale streets around it carry the widest design range in the country, much of it never listed online. A photographs-over-WhatsApp trade rather than a checkout one.
Regional pressesKerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra and Bengal presses set cards in their own scripts as a matter of course. If the invitation needs Malayalam, Tamil or Bengali beside English, they will do it properly.
Instagram and independent designersWhere the illustrated and fully custom work sits, caricature invitations included. Many take orders only by direct message and deliver within India, which your Indian address turns into a local delivery.

Cards are the heaviest thing per rupee anywhere on this site. Treat the sample and the bulk run as two separate shipping decisions, because that is what they are.

What to check before you order

  • Order samples first, then place the bulk order quickly. Printers are explicit that paper and finish drift between production batches, so a sample approved months before the run guarantees very little.
  • Count the inserts before you count the cards. One invitation often carries three or four — reception, mehendi, haldi, a map — and each of them multiplies by your guest count.
  • Names, dates and wording are typeset in India in whatever script you ask for. Send the text as a typed document rather than a photograph, and have someone in India read the vernacular proof. A reprint is a second shipment.
  • Nikah, Walima, engagement and Christian ceremony cards are usually a separate catalogue rather than a variation on the Hindu range, and often are not on the page you land on first. Ask for them by name.
  • Decide the envelopes early. Cards come with envelopes sized for the card, and if you plan to post them where you live they need to be ones your own postal service will carry at a sensible rate.

Weight, customs and getting it here intact

Weight

The heaviest order on this site, and not by a small margin. A deliberately light card with its inserts and envelope runs about 55g; an ordinary one with a hard cover and gold work is nearer 80 to 100g. Two hundred and fifty of those is 14 to 25 kg before any packing.

Volume

Cards are dense rather than bulky, which works in your favour here. Packed flat they ship close to their actual weight, so the volumetric calculation that drives the cost of clothes and homeware does not bite on a card order.

Customs

Printed matter at a low value per unit. Declare them as printed wedding invitations showing the per-card price and the count. Check what your destination allows.

Condition

Gold foil, laser cut and velvet finishes scuff against each other. They travel in the printer's own bundles inside the box rather than loose, and a sample sent ahead is kept separate so you can hold it against the run.

Indian Wedding Invitations to the UK

Two things are different here from the American version of this problem. The first is what people are actually looking for: Nikah, Walima and engagement cards are a far larger share of UK demand than they are of American, and Indian printers keep that range in a separate catalogue rather than on the pages you land on first, so it has to be asked for by name. The second is the posting at your end. Royal Mail's Letter rate stops at 24 x 16.5 cm and 5 mm thick, and an Indian card with a hard cover and three inserts is over 5 mm before it is over anything else — so a two hundred-card send goes at Large Letter rates whatever the envelope looks like. Price that in alongside the shipping, because on a long UK guest list it is often the bigger of the two numbers.

Will I pay VAT on wedding cards coming into the UK?

Assume yes. The UK charges import VAT from the first pound with no de-minimis allowance, and customs duty on top once the goods value passes £135. Both are charged on declared value plus shipping.

What will it cost to post them on to guests in the UK?

More than most people expect, and thickness is the reason. Royal Mail's Letter rate stops at 5 mm thick, and an Indian card with a hard cover and inserts clears that on its own, so almost all of these go at Large Letter rates. Large Letter runs to 35.3 x 25 cm and 750g, so the weight is not the problem — the depth is. Take one finished card to a Post Office and price it before you commit to a design, not after 250 of them have landed.

Indian Wedding Invitations to Malaysia

Many Malaysian Indian families, Tamil and Malayali especially, still print their wedding invitations in India. Sivakasi and other Tamil Nadu presses set Tamil as a matter of course, Kerala presses set Malayalam, and both quote per hundred cards at Indian prices. Cards are heavy, so weigh one finished card before choosing a design: 250 cards with inserts and envelopes come to roughly 14 to 25 kg. Parcels up to RM500 arriving by air courier are free of import duty; registered online sellers charge a 10% low-value goods tax at checkout. Above RM500, import duty and sales tax apply.

Can Indian printers set the invitation in Tamil or Malayalam?

Yes. Tamil Nadu presses set Tamil as a matter of course, and Kerala presses set Malayalam. Send the wording as a typed document and have someone who reads the script check the proof.

Indian Wedding Invitations to the USA

Many Indian American families still print their wedding cards in India, where printers quote per hundred cards at Indian prices and set Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Malayalam or Hindi beside English as a matter of course. On a card order the weight decides the cost: 250 cards with inserts and envelopes come to roughly 14 to 25 kg, so weigh one finished card before you choose a design, and order the samples before the full run. Indian Wedding Invitations to Australia

Many Indian Australian families still print their wedding cards in India, where printers quote per hundred cards at Indian prices and set Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu or Punjabi beside English as a matter of course. On a card order the weight decides the cost: 250 cards with inserts and envelopes come to roughly 14 to 25 kg, so weigh one finished card before you choose a design, and order the samples before the full run. Plain printed cards clear without trouble, but Australian biosecurity inspects anything with wood, cane, seeds or dried flowers, so avoid those finishes and boxed cards with natural materials. GST and duty generally apply to goods valued over AUD 1,000.

Questions

Should I order a sample before the full run?

Yes, and then order the run within a week or two of approving it. Printers say plainly that material and finish vary between batches, so a sample approved three months early guarantees little. It is also the only way to judge the weight and the paper in your hand rather than from a photograph.

How much do 250 Indian wedding cards weigh?

Between about 14 and 25 kg. Light designs with inserts and envelope run around 55g each; a hard-cover card with gold work is nearer 80 to 100g. Multiply the per-card weight by your guest count before you order — on this product the weight decides the shipping cost almost by itself.

Can the printer put our names and dates on the cards?

That is the normal way Indian cards are sold: the design is chosen, then the text is set. Send the wording as a typed document, specify the script, and have someone in India read the proof. Catching a mistake at proof stage costs nothing; catching it after the run costs a reprint and a second shipment.

Do Indian printers make Nikah, Walima and Christian wedding cards?

Widely, but usually as a separate catalogue rather than part of the Hindu range, and often not on the page you land on first. Ask for it by name. The same goes for engagement, reception and house-warming cards.

Is going direct cheaper than a site that already delivers to me?

Sometimes, and it is worth the arithmetic rather than the assumption. Take the per-card price the printer quotes at your quantity, add our shipping for the weight you calculated, and compare that against the delivered price from a site that sells to your country. Direct usually wins on large orders and on anything unusual.
