Buying Indian jewellery from India when you live abroad

Yes — you can buy Indian jewellery from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.
Why this is hard to buy where you are
Indian jewellery abroad is priced as an import and stocked as an afterthought. The sets that go with a specific saree, in the specific stone colour, at a price that makes sense for something worn twice, are sold by Indian shops to Indian customers. There is also a design question no diaspora shop solves: temple jewellery, Kundan and Polki are regional crafts with real depth, and the range that exists in Jaipur, Hyderabad and Chennai does not travel to a single rail in a shop abroad.

Jewellery is the category where a retailer's international policy changes most often, because the shipping and insurance rules differ by country. Ordering to your India Rabbit address takes that out of the equation.
What to check before you order
- Know which of three things you are buying: imitation or fashion jewellery, which is brass or alloy with plating; Kundan and Polki, which are traditional settings that may be gold-foil on lac or actual gold; or hallmarked gold. They look similar in photographs and are completely different at customs.
- For anything described as gold, the listing should state the karat and the hallmark. If it does not say, assume it is plated.
- Temple jewellery is usually gold-plated silver or brass and is sold by weight and finish rather than by karat. That is normal for the craft, not a sign of misdescription. A silver base counts as silver, which we cannot ship; on brass or alloy it travels.
- Buy the set rather than the pieces where you can. Matching a necklace to earrings later, from abroad, across a different production run, rarely works.
- Ask us before ordering anything you are unsure about. We ship imitation, Kundan-on-foil, temple-on-brass and fashion jewellery; we do not ship real gold, silver or diamond pieces.
Weight, customs and getting it here intact
Weight
Almost weightless in shipping terms. A full bridal set is a few hundred grams, so jewellery is the classic thing to add to a consolidated box you are already sending rather than to ship alone.
Volume
Small, but it is packed for protection rather than for compactness. A rigid box inside the parcel is worth the few cubic centimetres it costs.
Customs
We do not ship real gold, silver or diamond jewellery, and bullion, coins and loose stones never travel by air courier. Imitation, Kundan, temple-on-brass and fashion jewellery go as ordinary declared goods; duty thresholds differ by country, so check your destination page. Check what your destination allows.
Condition
Plated and Kundan pieces tarnish and lift if they sit against other items or in humidity. They travel in their own box, wrapped, and we photograph valuable pieces on arrival so there is a record of the condition we received them in.

The USA is the one market where people search for this in so many words — including specifically for 22 karat, which American retail does not sell as standard and which is precisely why the search exists. US customs allows gold jewellery in personal quantities with the value declared, but India Rabbit does not ship real gold, silver or diamond jewellery, so 22 karat pieces need to travel with someone flying. Can I import 22k gold jewellery into the USA?
US customs allows gold jewellery in personal quantities with the value declared, but India Rabbit does not ship real gold, silver or diamond jewellery, so it has to travel with someone flying. Bullion, coins and loose stones never travel by air courier.
Will US customs charge duty on Indian jewellery?
Duty is assessed on the declared value against the US threshold. Imitation and fashion jewellery typically falls below the level where it matters; anything of real value usually does not.
Indian Jewellery to the UK
'Indian jewelry online from India' and 'Indian jewelry in UK' are both searched from Britain. The jewellers in Southall, Wembley and Leicester sell real gold; what people order from India is kundan, polki-style, temple and oxidised fashion jewellery to match an outfit, at a fraction of UK prices. Can you ship gold jewellery from India?
No. India Rabbit does not ship real gold, silver or diamond jewellery, whatever the destination allows; plan for those pieces to travel with someone flying. Imitation, Kundan, temple-on-brass and fashion jewellery, yes. Because the rules and the duty differ by country, talk to us before you order.
Is imitation jewellery easier to send?
Considerably, and it is what most people are actually buying. Kundan, Polki, temple and fashion jewellery are ordinary declared goods with no special handling beyond careful packing, and no value threshold worth worrying about.
How do I know whether a piece is really gold?
The listing should state the karat and show a hallmark. Anything that does not is plated, whatever the photograph suggests. This matters for customs as much as for what you are paying for.
Will I pay duty on jewellery?
On imitation and fashion pieces, usually little or nothing on their own. On anything of real value, expect duty against your country's threshold on the declared value.
Can I send jewellery with the rest of a wedding order?
Yes, and it is the efficient way to do it since it adds almost no weight. It is packed separately inside the same box so it is protected without needing its own shipment.
