Buying readymade saree blouses from India when you live abroad

The half of a saree that is hardest to solve once you leave India — a blouse that actually fits, without hunting for a tailor who has stitched one before.

Yes — you can buy readymade saree blouses from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.

Why this is hard to buy where you are

A saree is sold as fabric plus an unstitched blouse piece, and that piece is useless until someone makes it. In India that is a tailor on the next street who has stitched a thousand of them. How easily you can replace that depends entirely on where you live. In a city with a large, long-settled Indian community there may well be someone nearby who knows the pattern. Across most of the United States there is not, which is where the demand for readymade blouses is overwhelmingly concentrated: general alteration shops have never seen the pattern, the few people who have are booked and expensive, and posting the piece to India and back costs more than the saree did. Readymade blouses in standard sizes are how people actually solve this, and almost nobody outside India sells them in any range.

Where to buy it

ShopWhat they are good for
Amazon.in and FlipkartThe widest readymade blouse ranges anywhere, across sizes, sleeve lengths and necklines, at prices that make buying two sizes sensible.
Myntra and AjioBetter on designer and occasion blouses, and generally better photographed, which matters when you are matching a colour.
Mirraw and Utsav FashionSpecialists in saree and blouse pairings, including ready-to-wear sarees with the blouse already stitched.
Kerala silk housesSeveral will stitch a blouse to your measurements from the piece that came with the saree, then send both to us. Ask them at the time of ordering.
Instagram and boutique sellersWhere much of the custom and designer blouse work sits. If they cannot post to your country, your Indian address makes it a local delivery.

Blouses are light and cheap to ship, so this is the classic thing to add to a saree order you are already placing rather than to buy on its own.

What to check before you order

  • Indian blouse sizes are cut to the bust measurement in inches, not to letter sizes. A 38 is a 38-inch bust. Measure rather than converting from a UK or US size.
  • Order the size above your measurement if you are between two. A blouse can be taken in almost anywhere; letting one out needs seam allowance that may not be there.
  • Padded, non-padded and with or without a lining are different garments that photograph the same. The listing says which — it is worth reading.
  • Sleeve length, neckline depth and back design are the three things people regret. All three are usually given in inches in the description.
  • If you are matching a saree you already own, buy from a photograph of the actual saree in daylight rather than from memory. Zari and silk colours do not reproduce reliably on screen.

Weight, customs and getting it here intact

Weight

Around 100-200g each. This is the lightest thing we handle, which means several blouses add almost nothing to a box you are already sending and are barely worth shipping alone.

Volume

Negligible. They fold flat and fill the gaps around heavier items, so they effectively travel free inside a consolidated parcel.

Customs

An ordinary ready-made garment at a low declared value. On its own it is usually below any duty threshold; in a larger box it is assessed as part of the whole. Check what your destination allows.

Condition

Blouses with hooks, beading or mirror work catch on saree fabric. They are packed separately inside the box rather than pressed against the sarees they are meant to go with.

Questions

What size readymade blouse should I order?

Indian blouses are sized by bust measurement in inches, so a 38 fits a 38-inch bust. Measure yourself rather than converting a UK or US size, and if you fall between two, take the larger — taking a blouse in is easy anywhere, letting it out often is not possible.

Can I get a blouse stitched from the piece that came with my saree?

Yes. Several Kerala silk houses will stitch to your measurements if you ask at the time of ordering, and send the saree and the finished blouse to us together. It takes longer than buying readymade, so allow for it if there is a date involved.

Is it worth shipping blouses on their own?

Rarely. At 100-200g each they are close to free inside a box you are already sending, and close to all shipping cost if sent alone. Order them with the sarees.

Can I order several to find the right fit?

That is the sensible approach, and it is what the weight makes possible. Two or three blouses in a mixed box cost very little extra, and it saves the return that is genuinely difficult once a parcel has left India.

Do readymade blouses work with any saree?

Physically yes, visually it depends on the colour and the work. Contrast blouses are entirely normal and often deliberate; matching an exact zari shade from a screen is the part that goes wrong, so buy from a daylight photograph of the saree itself.
