Buying a Paithani saree from India when you live abroad

Flip the pallu over. On a real Paithani the peacock is identical on both sides, and that is the whole test.

Yes — you can buy paithani sarees from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.

Why this is hard to buy where you are

Paithani Sarees and Fabrics is GI-registered, and the craft has one defining feature that no powerloom can fake. The border and pallu are woven separately from the body and interlocked thread by thread, so the motif reads the same from the front and the back with no floating threads behind it. Yeola in Nashik district is where most of it is made today. A shop abroad will sell you a Paithani; it will rarely be able to tell you which motif you are buying or what the zari is.

Where to buy it

ShopWhat they are good for
Kapse PaithaniRegistered in Yeola itself, which is as close to source as online buying gets, with a full ladder from everyday to heirloom.
KankatalaThe serious end. Classifies by the border types that actually matter — Muniya, Akruthi, Asawali, Mor Bangdi — and sources from Yeola and Paithan weavers.
Paithani StoreYeola. Entry level and unusually transparent about it, describing its semi-silk openly as a silk-cotton blend rather than burying the fact.
PratishthaniKalyan-based, selling Yeola-style handloom across handloom, semi and wedding pieces. If any of these cannot deliver to your country, your Indian address makes it a domestic order.

Weaver-run businesses in Yeola are set up for domestic delivery first and overseas orders occasionally. Your Indian address removes that entirely and puts you on the same footing as a customer in Pune.

What to check before you order

  • Flip the pallu. The motif should be identical on both faces with no loose threads floating behind it, because border and pallu are interlocked with the body rather than woven over it. A motif readable on one side only is a powerloom copy, a print or embroidery.
  • Check the motif against the traditional repertoire: peacock, peacock-in-bangle, lotus, parrot, flowering vine. Bangadi Mor is the most prized. A generic digital floral is a reason to ask more questions.
  • Rub a border zari thread. Real zari stays smooth with a soft warm glow and does not crack when folded. Plastic metallic film catches, looks brassy and flakes at the creases.
  • Understand what semi-silk means before you buy it. It is a silk-cotton blend with imitation zari, it is a legitimate product at its price, and it is not a handloom Paithani. Honest sellers label it; others let you assume.
  • Allow real time if you want a specific pallu. A fully handwoven piece is months of work on the loom, and the good ones are not sitting in stock waiting for you.

Weight, customs and getting it here intact

Weight

Around 700-950g for a piece with a full-motif pallu, on a seller-stated figure rather than a published spec, so treat it as indicative. Lighter semi-silk pieces are less. One saree is a small parcel either way and two or three barely change the band.

Volume

Silk folds down well, so the box stays small and volumetric rarely governs. The pallu is the part that must not be creased hard, so we fold along existing lines rather than to fit a smaller carton.

Customs

A fully handwoven Paithani is expensive enough to clear most thresholds on its own. Semi-silk pieces often sit below. The threshold and rate are your country's, and your destination page carries what we hold. Check what your destination allows.

Condition

Zari is metal thread and it abrades against itself. Each saree is wrapped alone in tissue, pallu folded outward rather than pressed against the border, and photographed before it ships.

Questions

What is the pallu test?

Turn the pallu over. Because the border and pallu are woven separately and interlocked with the body thread by thread, the motif on a genuine Paithani reads identically from both sides with nothing floating behind it. If the motif only appears on the front, it is not a handwoven Paithani.

What is semi-silk Paithani?

A silk-cotton blend with imitation zari. It is a real product at a real price and it looks good, but it is not handloom and it should not cost handloom money. The better sellers say so plainly on the listing.

Which motif should I look for?

Bangadi Mor, the peacock in a bangle, is the most prized. Peacock, lotus, parrot and the Asawali flowering vine are the other classical ones. A seller who can name the motif is a seller who knows what they are selling.

How long will it take?

Six weeks is comfortable for stock. For a specific handwoven pallu, think in months, because the weaving happens before anything reaches our warehouse.

Can I combine it with other wedding shopping?

Yes. Everything ordered for one occasion comes to the same Indian address, waits free for 30 days while the rest arrives, and ships together as one consignment.
