Two things matter more here than with any other store. Sizing runs by age in India and by height elsewhere, and Indian age labels tend to run small — buy a size up if you are guessing, since a child will grow into it. And several countries apply their own safety rules to toys, teats, feeding bottles and anything a child puts in its mouth, and Australia and New Zealand add biosecurity checks on wooden toys. What travels well, and what does not

Clothing, cotton bedding, books and flat wooden toys are near-perfect: dense, light for their size, and nothing a customs officer objects to. Prams, cots, walkers and high chairs are the opposite — large, awkward and charged on the space they occupy rather than what they weigh. Baby food, formula and supplements are restricted almost everywhere and should be assumed to be out. Put real dimensions into the calculator before committing to anything with wheels.

Consolidation is worth more here than anywhere

Baby orders are the classic many-small-parcels case: three sets of clothes, a toy, a book and some toiletries arriving separately over a fortnight, often from different FirstCry sellers. Sent one by one, each pays its own international minimum charge — which is how a modest order ends up costing more in freight than in goods. Buy for the size after next

This is the one piece of advice that saves diaspora parents the most money, and it has nothing to do with shipping. A box takes days to reach you and a child grows continuously, so buy the size the child will be in three months, not the size they are in now, and buy two of anything that works. The marginal cost of a second outfit in the same box is close to nothing; the cost of a second box in three months is the whole international rate again.
