Buying from India When You're Not Indian
Invited to an Indian wedding, hooked on a particular tea, or after handicrafts you cannot find at home? You do not need family in India to buy from Indian shops.
I'm not Indian and live abroad. How can I buy things directly from India? Use an Indian delivery address. India Rabbit gives you one free at its warehouse in Kerala: you order tea, spices, handicrafts, yoga clothing or a wedding outfit from Indian websites to that address, and we receive each parcel, photograph it and ship everything to you in one box. You do not need to be Indian: a passport from any country is accepted for the one-time ID check.
Why buy from India directly
Indian shops carry far more than the Indian section of a store abroad, at Indian prices: whole and ground spices, Assam and Darjeeling teas, block-printed textiles, brass and wooden handicrafts, cotton yoga clothing, and ethnic wear in every size and budget. If a shop cannot deliver to your country, an Indian address closes the gap.
How it works
- Sign up free and you get an Indian address with your own suite code at our warehouse in Kerala. You do not need to be Indian, or to have family or a home in India: we already ship for customers who are not Indian. We ask for ID once at signup, as Indian export rules require, and a passport from any country is accepted.
- Order on Indian websites and enter that address at checkout. Your own card works on many Indian shops; where one asks for an Indian card or UPI, see paying on Indian shopping sites from abroad.
- We receive and photograph each parcel, so you can check what arrived, and hold everything free for 30 days.
- Ask us to ship, and it comes to you in one box with tracking.
What people buy, and what to know
- Tea and spices: sealed, labelled packs travel best, and each country has its own food rules. See sending food from India.
- Handicrafts: brass, textiles, paintings and wooden pieces. Wood and plant materials need care for Australia and New Zealand. See Indian handicrafts.
- Yoga clothing and cotton basics: light and easy to ship, and several fit in one box.
- A wedding guest outfit: a kurta set or sherwani for men, a saree, lehenga or salwar suit for women. Indian sizes run differently from Western ones, so measure a garment that fits you and compare with the size chart. See Indian wedding shopping from abroad, and the store guides for Manyavar, BIBA and Fabindia.
What we cannot send
Perfume and attar, nail polish, aerosols, incense and anything else that burns, anything with a built-in battery, and gold, silver or diamond jewellery. See prohibited items for your country.
Cost
The address, storage and repacking are free. You pay for the box you ship, on its finished weight, with Premium and Economy shown side by side; try the shipping calculator. Import duty, where it applies, is charged by your own country.
