DHL, India Post or a Forwarder: India to the USA

Three ways to get something from India to the USA, and which one fits what you are sending: a parcel your family hands over, or orders from Indian websites.

What is the best way to send a parcel from India to the USA? It depends on what you are sending. For something you already have in your hands, such as documents or a gift from family, an express courier like DHL or FedEx, or India Post, books it from India directly. For things bought on Indian websites, a forwarder is usually simpler and cheaper: you order to a free Indian address, it combines several orders into one box and ships it to your door. With India Rabbit that is typically 4 to 12 business days to the USA after the box leaves India. Whichever you choose, there is no duty-free allowance for parcels from India any more, so duty is paid at the US end unless the shipment is sent duty paid.

When an express courier is the right choice

If a family member in India has a box ready today and it has to arrive fast, booking DHL or FedEx from India is the direct route. The sender books and pays, shows ID for the export paperwork, and the courier delivers to the door in the USA. It works well for one parcel. It gets expensive when the things you want are scattered across several Indian websites, because each one becomes its own shipment with its own base charge.

When India Post is the right choice

India Post is the usual choice for a family sending a parcel when there is no rush. After the USA ended the duty-free allowance in 2025, India Post paused most services to the USA and resumed them on 15 October 2025 with a duty-paid model, where the sender pays the US duty at booking. US rules for postal shipments changed again in July 2026, so ask at the post office how the duty is charged before you book.

When a forwarder is the right choice

Most Indian websites only deliver inside India, and a box built from several shops is where the money is saved. With India Rabbit:

  1. Sign up free and get an Indian address at our warehouse in Kerala with your own suite code.
  2. Order from Amazon.in, Flipkart, Myntra, Nykaa or any Indian shop to that address. Family can send things to the same address.
  3. We open and photograph each parcel when it arrives and hold everything free for 30 days.
  4. We repack it all into one box, free, and quote the price on the real packed weight before anything ships.
  5. It ships to your door in the USA with tracking, typically 4 to 12 business days after it leaves India.

There is no membership and no monthly fee; you pay only for the box. Rates to the USA are on the India to the USA page and in the calculator.

US customs duty on parcels from India

  • No duty-free allowance. The USD 800 exemption was suspended on 29 August 2025, and US Customs has since made the suspension indefinite. The only small exemption left is a genuine gift from one person to another worth USD 100 or less; an online order does not count.
  • The normal US rate for each item, set by its tariff code. Clothing, food, books and cosmetics each have their own rate, and some items are duty-free.
  • An extra 10% on goods made in India since 24 July 2026, on top of the normal rate. A few categories are excluded, among them pharmaceuticals and goods that already carry Section 232 duties, such as steel and aluminium.

Duty is set by US Customs, not by the carrier or by us, although a courier may add its own fee for clearing it. These rules have changed several times since 2025, so check the CBP website before a large order.

What not to send to the USA

US Customs stops meat in any form, fresh fruit and vegetables, seeds and most plant material, and is strict on dairy. Whatever the carrier, we cannot ship perfume, nail polish or aerosols, anything with a battery such as phones and laptops, anything that burns, or gold, silver and diamond jewellery. The full list is on prohibited items for the USA.

What makes it cost more

  • Size, not just weight. A light but bulky box is charged on its volumetric weight. Check yours with the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Several small shipments. Each one carries its own base charge and goes through US clearance on its own. One combined box pays once.
  • Speed. Where an Economy service runs, it is slower and cheaper than Premium; see Economy or Premium.
