Package & Parcel Forwarding from India — The Complete Guide

Everything that happens between an Indian checkout page and a parcel on your doorstep abroad, explained once, properly.

What is parcel forwarding from India? It is a way to buy from Indian shops that do not deliver to your country. You are given a real Indian delivery address, you use it at checkout as an ordinary domestic customer, and the shop delivers there. We receive the parcel, hold it while you order from anywhere else, strip the retail packaging, repack everything into one box, and send that box to you with tracking. You pay for the international leg; your own country charges any import duty separately.

What parcel forwarding is

You are given a real delivery address in India that belongs to you. You shop Indian websites as a domestic customer and have your orders delivered to it. A warehouse receives them, holds them, combines them into one box and sends that box to your country. That is the whole idea; everything below is detail.

Why it is necessary

Indian e-commerce was built for domestic delivery. Amazon.in, Flipkart, Myntra, Ajio, Nykaa and Meesho each set their own rules on foreign delivery addresses, and those rules vary by seller and change without notice. Direct international courier from a single store, where offered at all, is priced per order — so five orders means five base charges.

Consolidation is where the money is

International air freight is charged on a base rate plus weight, so the number of boxes matters more than most people expect. Five separate parcels means five base rates. Combined into one, repacked without the retail cartons, it is a single rate on a smaller, denser box. This is the single biggest lever on your bill and the reason forwarding is worth doing at all.

Volumetric weight, and why light parcels cost a lot

Airlines charge for the space a box occupies, not only what it weighs. A carrier calculates volumetric weight from the dimensions — length × width × height divided by a standard divisor — and bills whichever is greater, actual or volumetric. A duvet, a cushion set or a light fixture is expensive to fly precisely because it is bulky and light. Removing retail packaging and packing tightly is what brings that number down.

Customs, duty and paperwork

Two customs authorities see your box: India on the way out, and your own country on the way in. On the Indian side, an outbound courier shipment needs a declaration of contents and value, and Indian regulations require the exporter of record to be identified, which is why KYC is collected once at signup. On the receiving side, duty and tax are set by your country against the declared value, and are payable by you, not by us. Every country sets its own de minimis threshold below which nothing is charged.

What cannot go

Some things cannot leave India by air courier at all, and some cannot enter your country. Anything with a battery, aerosols, flammables, currency and gold are refused outright. Food, seeds, plant material, ayurvedic preparations and anything medicinal are the common surprises — allowed by India, restricted or banned on arrival depending on where you live.

What it costs

A forwarding bill is the international freight, priced on chargeable weight to your destination, plus GST, which Indian law requires on a service supplied from India. Receiving, storing, photographing, repacking and consolidating are part of the service rather than separate line items. The one cost that is not on the bill at all is the duty your own customs charges on arrival, which is theirs to set and yours to pay. Storage for the first 30 days is free, so there is no cost to letting parcels accumulate until you have enough to make one box worthwhile.

Choosing a forwarder

Ask four questions. Do they photograph parcels on arrival, so you can see what came before you pay to fly it? Do they show you the price before you commit? Is the bill itemised, or does a handling charge appear at the end? And is storage long enough that you can wait for the rest of your order without paying for the privilege?

Questions

How long does parcel forwarding from India take?

The international leg typically runs a few business days to around two weeks depending on destination and service. Add the time your Indian orders take to reach the warehouse, and any time you choose to wait while consolidating.

Which package forwarding company can give me an Indian address?

India Rabbit is one: a free Indian address at our warehouse in Kerala with your own suite code, 30 days of free storage, free photos and repacking, and one box to your country. When comparing services, look at what is free, how long parcels are held, any membership fee and the price of the final box.

Is package forwarding from India legal?

Yes. It is an ordinary export by courier, declared to Indian customs like any other. Regulations require the exporter to be identified, which is why KYC documents are collected once when you sign up.

How much can consolidation actually save?

It depends entirely on how many parcels you combine and how bulky they are, but the saving comes from paying one base rate instead of several and from repacking to cut volumetric weight. The more separate orders you would otherwise ship, the larger the difference.

Will I pay customs duty?

That is set by your own country against the declared value of the shipment, and is payable by you on arrival. Every country has a threshold below which nothing is charged; above it, the rate depends on what is in the box.

What is volumetric weight?

A carrier measures the box and divides length by width by height by a standard divisor to get a weight for the space it occupies, then charges on whichever is higher, that or the actual weight. It is why a large light parcel can cost more than a small heavy one.

Why do you need my ID?

Indian export regulations require the exporter of record to be identified on outbound courier shipments. It is collected once, at signup, and is not needed again.
