Jayalakshmi was founded in 1947 by Narasimha Kamath and describes itself as a premier destination for sarees and bridal wear. Its website lists Kanjivaram, Banarasi, silk, fancy and kasavu sarees, bridal and party lehengas and gowns. But its own FAQ is clear that the website is not an e-commerce platform: it is there to help you explore the collections before visiting a store. So buying from abroad means someone buys in person, or you arrange it with the store directly.

The way most families do it

1. Sign up for a free India Rabbit address. It gives you a suite code at our warehouse in Kerala.
2. A parent, sibling or friend chooses with you on a video call from the showroom and pays there.
3. They hand the parcel to us, or we collect it from them anywhere in Kerala; the domestic leg is charged at cost and we tell you the figure first.
4. We log it against your suite code, open it and photograph it, so you see exactly what was bought.
5. It waits free for 30 days while the rest of the wedding shopping arrives, then everything ships to you together.

Nobody in your family needs an account or has to deal with the international side.

Before the saree leaves Kerala

• Get the blouse stitched in Kerala if you can. A tailor there can alter it after a fitting photo; once it is abroad, that is much harder. We do not stitch, but the tailor can send the finished piece to your suite.
• Keep the bill. We prepare the customs declaration from it, and it records the real value.
• Ask for the retail box to be left out if it is bulky. The saree ships on its real weight.
