Why this is hard to buy where you are

Supermarket spices abroad are blended and repacked far from where they grew. In Kerala you can buy whole spices from the hills where they are grown, by grade, from the season's crop. Two Kerala spices carry geographical indications registered with the Spices Board: Malabar Pepper and Alleppey Green Cardamom. Thalanadan Grambu, a Kerala clove, has one too.

What to check before you order

  • Look for the GI name on the pack: Malabar Pepper or Alleppey Green Cardamom.
  • Cardamom is sold by size. 8 mm and above is bold; larger pods usually cost more.
  • Buy whole rather than ground where you can. Whole spices keep their flavour far longer.
  • Choose sealed or vacuum packs. They travel better and are easier at customs.

Weight, customs and getting it here intact

Weight

Light and dense. A kilo of mixed spices is a small parcel.

Volume

Compact, so it ships on its real weight.

Customs

Declared as dried spices. New Zealand's import conditions list common dried spices, including cardamom, cumin, coriander and fenugreek, without extra certificates, provided they are free of pests, soil and weed seeds. Australia inspects food and seeds in mail, so declare everything and check its rules for whole seeds. Check what your destination allows.

Condition

We keep spices sealed and pack them away from clothing so nothing picks up the smell.

Indian Spices to Ireland

Ireland's Indian community, with many Malayali families in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway, has Asian grocers, but the Indian range is small and priced for import, and outside the cities it is thin. From India you can order the masala brands people cook with at home, such as MDH, Everest, Eastern and Aachi, together with whole Malabar pepper and Alleppey cardamom from Kerala growers, and send them in one box. Sealed spices, masala and curry powders, vegetarian pickles and tea travel to Ireland. The EU does not allow personal imports of meat or dairy from outside the EU, so ghee, milk sweets and beef pickle stay out of the box. Import VAT of 23% applies to almost all goods, and since 1 July 2026 parcels up to €150 also pay a €3 customs duty per item category; normal duty applies above €150. The recipient usually pays before delivery.

Indian Spices to the UK

Southall, Wembley, Leicester and Birmingham sell Indian groceries well, so what people order from India is what those shops do not carry: whole Malabar pepper and Alleppey cardamom straight from Kerala growers, regional masalas and podis, and small-brand spice mixes from home. Sealed spices, masala and curry powders, vegetarian pickles and tea travel to the UK. Great Britain does not permit personal imports of meat or dairy from India, so ghee, milk sweets and beef pickle stay out of the box. For goods up to £135, UK VAT at 20% is normally charged by the seller at checkout; above £135, the courier collects VAT and any duty before delivery. Since 15 July 2026 the UK–India trade agreement has cut or removed duty on many goods made in India where the origin rules are met. VAT still applies.
