A chaniya choli is the three-piece outfit worn for garba at Navratri: a flared chaniya skirt, a fitted choli and an odhni. The traditional styles are Gujarati: Kutch mirror work (abhla), Rabari and Ahir embroidery, and bandhani, and markets like Law Garden in Ahmedabad sell them in huge variety before the festival. Abroad, the choice is thin and the prices are much higher, and every diaspora family wants theirs in the same few weeks of the year.

What to check before you order

Order early. Navratri falls in September or October, and allowing at least three weeks from order to garba night is the usual advice; with the international leg on top, order a month or more ahead.
Check how it is sold. Sets come semi-stitched (often a free size up to about 42 inches), unstitched to be tailored, or made to measure. Indian sizes do not match US or UK sizes, so measure yourself and size up on the choli if unsure.
Know the styles. Mirror work (abhla) and Kutch embroidery are heavy and festive; bandhani is lighter and easier to dance in.
Buy the whole family's outfits together. Several sets in one box cost far less than separate parcels.

Weight

Heavier than a saree. A mirror-work set is around 1.2 kg and a heavily embroidered one can reach 2 kg, so the weight band is worth checking in the calculator.

Volume

The flared chaniya is bulky but soft. We fold it tightly and remove extra packaging, so a set usually ships on its real weight.

Customs

Declared as clothing at its real value. Duty and import tax are set by your country. Check what your destination allows.

Condition

Mirror and bead work is wrapped so it does not catch or scratch, and each set goes in its own sealed bag.
