Buying phulkari from Punjab when you live abroad
Phulkari is worked from the back. The embroiderer counts the stitches off the threads and does not see the front until it is finished, which is why no two pieces are the same.
Yes — you can buy phulkari from Indian shops even if they do not deliver to your country. India Rabbit gives you a free delivery address in India. You order to that address as an ordinary domestic customer, we receive and hold the parcel free for 30 days, combine it with anything else you buy, and forward the lot to you.
Why this is hard to buy where you are
Phulkari is GI-registered, and the government's own GI listing names Patiala district as the place producing the high-quality work. The craft has one defining feature: it is a darn stitch, in long and short forms, worked entirely from the reverse of the cloth with the motif counted off the weave rather than traced onto it. Traditionally it is untwisted silk floss, called pat, on coarse handspun cotton khaddar. That reverse-side method is also what makes hand work legible as hand work, because counting from the back produces motifs that vary slightly across the cloth in a way no machine does. What reaches diaspora shops abroad is mostly machine embroidery sold at hand-work prices; the genuine pieces sell through Indian craft retailers and state outlets, and those sell to people who can receive a domestic parcel.
Where to buy it
| Shop | What they are good for |
|---|---|
| iTokri | Carries a few hundred hand-embroidered phulkari dupattas at a time, sourced directly from craftspeople, and names the base cloth on each piece rather than leaving you to guess. |
| indiahandmade.com | An initiative of the Ministry of Textiles selling direct from artisans, with a GI-tagged section, which is the useful filter for a craft this widely imitated. |
| GI Tagged | Sells phulkari dupattas specifically under the geographical indication, which is a narrower and more expensive range by design. |
| Amazon.in and Myntra | The widest selection and the highest proportion of machine work. Perfectly fine if that is what you want and you know it is what you are buying. If any of these cannot deliver to you, your Indian address makes the point moot. |
Craft retailers and state outlets in Punjab are built around domestic delivery, with overseas orders an occasional exception. Your Indian address puts you on the same footing as a customer in Patiala.
What to check before you order
- Hand or machine is the whole question, and the back answers it. Hand phulkari is darned from the reverse with no traced pattern, so the motifs vary slightly across the cloth and the reverse shows the darn structure itself. Machine embroidery repeats identically and usually leaves a stabiliser backing or jump stitches behind the work.
- Know whether you want a phulkari or a bagh. In a phulkari the motifs are scattered and the base cloth shows between them. In a bagh the embroidery covers the ground almost completely, which is many times the work, and it is ceremonial rather than everyday wear.
- Check the base cloth and price it accordingly. The traditional ground is coarse handspun khaddar. Most modern dupattas are on chanderi, chinon, kota doria or plain cotton, which are lighter to wear and entirely legitimate, but they are not khaddar and should not cost khaddar-plus-hand-work money.
- Ask what the thread is. Traditional phulkari uses untwisted silk floss, which has a flat soft sheen. A tight shiny twist or a synthetic thread reads differently in the hand and in daylight.
- Order well ahead of Vaisakhi or a wedding date. The embroidery is piecework and the good pieces are not stockpiled waiting for a deadline.
Weight, customs and getting it here intact
Weight
A phulkari dupatta on cotton or chanderi is roughly 200 to 400g, which makes it one of the lightest things worth forwarding. A khaddar bagh is far heavier, closer to a shawl. Several dupattas go into one small box, and that is the best value on the whole site per rupee of shipping.
Volume
Dupattas fold down to almost nothing and volumetric weight rarely governs. A khaddar bagh is the exception: it is bulky for its weight and the volumetric figure can be the one that counts.
Customs
Textiles, assessed on declared value against your country's threshold. An embroidered dupatta is often low enough in value to sit under it; a bagh usually is not. Your destination page carries the threshold and rate we hold for your country. Check what your destination allows.
Condition
Silk floss snags on itself and on rough surfaces. Pieces are folded with tissue between the layers rather than pressed flat against each other, and photographed before they ship.
Phulkari by country
Phulkari to Canada
Canada has large and long-settled Punjabi communities, concentrated around Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area, Surrey and Abbotsford in British Columbia, and Calgary and Edmonton. Two practical things follow. Toronto and Brampton have real Indian retail, so if you live there the comparison worth making is range rather than access: a Punjab craft retailer carries hand work that a local shop mostly does not. If you are in the prairies or the Atlantic provinces, access is the whole point. And Canada has the lowest import threshold of any country we ship to.
Transit: typically 4 to 14 business days once the box leaves our warehouse in Kerala. Shipping to Canada · What Canada will not let in
Is there duty on a phulkari dupatta into Canada?
Probably. Duty and GST usually apply above CAD 20, which is the lowest threshold of any destination we ship to, with gifts exempt up to CAD 60. A single dupatta can land near that line and a box of several will clear it. We declare value and contents accurately, which measurably speeds clearance, so treat the charge as part of the cost rather than a surprise.
When should I order for Vaisakhi?
Earlier than feels necessary. The embroidery is piecework, April is the busiest ordering window for exactly this craft, and the transit time to your province sits on top of that. Six weeks is comfortable; three is tight.

Questions
How do I tell hand-embroidered phulkari from machine work?
Look at the reverse. Hand phulkari is a darn stitch worked from the back with the motif counted off the weave and nothing traced on the cloth, so the motifs vary slightly across the piece and the back shows the stitch structure. Machine embroidery repeats identically and generally leaves a backing material or jump stitches behind the design.
What is the difference between phulkari and bagh?
Coverage. A phulkari has motifs scattered across the cloth with the ground visible between them. A bagh, meaning garden, is embroidered almost edge to edge so the base barely shows. A bagh is many times the labour and was traditionally ceremonial and wedding wear rather than everyday.
Does it have to be on khaddar?
No, but know which you are buying. Khaddar, the coarse handspun cotton, is the traditional ground and the heaviest. Chanderi, chinon, kota doria and plain cotton are common now and are lighter and easier to wear. The difference should show in the price.
Can I order if the shop does not ship to my country?
Yes. You order to the free Indian address we give you, the shop treats it as a domestic delivery, and we forward the parcel on to you.
Several of us are buying for one wedding. Can it all come together?
Yes, and it should. Everything ordered for the occasion arrives at the same Indian address, waits free for thirty days while the rest comes in, and ships as a single consignment rather than five separate parcels.
