When we visited lenskart.com from the United States on 31 October 2026, it opened a US version of the site, with a US support email, US terms and a 14-day return policy. If it has the frame you want at a price you are happy with, buy it there: that is the simplest route. The Indian site prices in rupees. Use your India Rabbit address for it when the frame you want is on the Indian site, or when you want your glasses in the same box as your other Indian orders.

What a US prescription gives you, and what it often leaves out

Under the FTC's Eyeglass Rule, your eye doctor must give you a copy of your prescription straight after an exam that includes a refraction, whether you ask for it or not. What it often lacks is your pupillary distance (PD), the distance between your pupils that centres each lens: the FTC notes that only a few states require it on the prescription, and some let the prescriber charge to measure it. An online order needs it, so ask for it at your exam. You cannot use an expired prescription to buy glasses or contact lenses.

Reading the numbers

For each eye you need SPH (sphere), CYL (cylinder) and axis, plus ADD for varifocals and prism if your doctor prescribed it. Right eye may be written OD or RE, left eye OS or LE. Some prescribers write cylinder as a plus number and others as a minus one, and both can describe the same correction. Copy the numbers exactly as written, sign and all. If an order form will not accept the way yours is written, ask the optician who wrote it to rewrite it rather than converting it yourself.

Glasses travel well; solution is the awkward part

Frames and finished spectacle lenses are light and rigid, and ship well in a hard case. Contact lens solution is a liquid: send it only sealed and unopened, declared item by item, and ask us first about peroxide-based cleaning systems. A litre weighs about a kilogram before packing, so it is usually cheaper to buy solution locally. Anything with a battery, smart glasses included, cannot be shipped.

US duty on eyewear from India

There is no duty-free allowance for parcels from India: the USD 800 exemption was suspended on 29 August 2025, and since 24 July 2026 goods from India carry an extra 10% duty on top of each item's normal rate. The calculator shows, service by service, whether duty for the USA is already in the price; where it is not, the courier collects it before delivery. One box of glasses, clothes and books is one clearance, not three.
